You may be thinking about owning your very own dog, but you have allergies. Don’t worry! There is still hope for you. Many breeds are hypoallergenic and don’t shed at all! You can enjoy the companionship of a dog without worrying about your allergies acting up. Even though these dogs don’t shed, this doesn’t equal low maintenance. Many dogs with low shedding and non-shedding coats still have high maintenance care requirements. Hair still falls out of these dogs’ coats, but because of the coat type, the hair often stays in the coat, making it easier for mats to form. If the mats get too bad, the groomer might shave off the whole coat instead of trying to brush them out. Here are five non-shedding dog breeds to consider when looking for your forever friend.

Poodles have a single coat that is more like hair than fur. It continuously grows and needs to be groomed at least once a month and brushed every day. Like hair, some fall out, but they stay in the coat, so Poodles don’t shed like other breeds. They have a curly coat that needs constant grooming to prevent mats and tangling in the coat. The non-shedding genetic trait of the Poodle’s coat is a dominant feature and is passed on to most Doodle mix breeds.

American Hairless Terrier

No dog is entirely hypoallergenic, but American Hairless Terriers get pretty darn close. These dogs have two types of coats: hairless and coated. Hairless means they have no hair besides whiskers and eyebrows. Coated means there is a very short coat of thin hair. Although American Hairless Terriers don’t have hair, that doesn’t mean they are completely hypoallergenic. Dandruff or dead skin can still flake off, and you could be allergic to their saliva, so you still have to be careful when choosing this breed if you’re an allergy sufferer!

Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier

The Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier originates from Ireland and has two coat types. The two types are Irish and Heavy. The Irish coat is generally silkier and thinner, while the heavy coat is thicker and fuller. Unlike dogs with double-coats, Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers don’t shed. Although they don’t shed, leaving a mess in the house, you’ll still have to maintain their coat in other ways. These dogs must be brushed at least twice daily to prevent mats from forming in their coat.

Like many Poodle mixes, Whoodles are hypoallergenic, but this isn’t only from their poodle side. Whoodles are a mix between the Poodle and the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier. As mentioned earlier, these dogs are also hypoallergenic, so adding that with the Poodle breed makes for one of the best hypoallergenic doodle dog breeds. Whoodles have a wavy coat like their Terrier side rather than the Poodle curl. These dogs are a great addition to the family! Afghan Hound

The Afghan Hound has a thick, fine, silky coat that is often shown off in dog shows worldwide. Surprisingly, Afghan Hounds only have to be brushed three times a week; however, they must be bathed more frequently than other breeds. You should generally bathe the Afghan Hound twice weekly for shows and every two weeks for around the house. Afghan Hounds have two hair types in their coat, one longer and thicker than the other, and should be groomed carefully for each area.

Most of these dog breeds have high coat maintenance regardless of their low to non-shedding coats. Many of these dogs are likely to be classified as show dogs and must look spectacular for the shows they participate in. While these breeds may be high maintenance, they are still extremely worth it if you have the time and money to properly care for their unique grooming needs. These dogs are playful, happy, and loyal. They will be by you for all their days.
